We’re a family of 4 living in Seattle. We rent. Philosophizing husband works in higher ed (ironically, not as a philosopher any more). Silas is six, and he’s our rock-star, adrenaline junky super-hero dude. He’s been to preschool in the past, so we’re not *gold-star* unschoolers. Whatever. We used a great play-based preschool at a time in our lives that made sense for us (namely, the addition of our second child into our lives). Said child, August, is 2 1/2. He’s our snuggle-bunny baby-lover. He even loves zombie babies, with no reservations (I have photos that prove this).

I’m the mama. I’m a librarian by training, but stay home with my dudes totally by choice, and I realize that we are lucky to be able to do this (and yet acknowledge that we make a lot of very specific choices that enable us to do this, as well). I love to read, learn stuff (lately about herbalism, buddhism, urban homesteading and gardening), cook and eat stuff, play music, sing, act goofy, watch awkward teen dramas, and all kinds of movies (though epic Science Fiction and/or Fantasy may top my list). I’m an introvert at heart, even though it might not seem like it at first. Trust me. Being social is taxing for me. For realz.

I hope to to use this blog to document the life learning we do (Now! With Photos!) and to connect with other homeschoolers/unschoolers Because I’ve always wanted a tribe, dammit.

  1. Dear Chessakat, It is so funny that your blog is titled FiveOclockDanceParty. My 18 year old daughter, Celina (http://mytinyabode.blogspot.com/) who has home and un-schooled for the past 4 years or so, is teaching a dance class with me (and has since she was 9) which we are marketing to home-schoolers. Do you know Michele McBride on Vashon. She is an amazing home-schooling organizer. Michele suggested we offer a class before our normal classes on Thursdays in Ballard, so we decided to start a Swing 1 class at 5pm – a FiveOclockDanceParty!! Please be in touch if you, your family, kids, and friends are interested in being involved. We encourage families and have had many kids, as young as 6, attending with their parents. My email is walter@everyonecandance.com and phone is 360-301-4755.

    • Thanks so much, Walter! How funny about the 5 O’Clock Dance Party! I don’t know Michele personally, but I’ve seen her name around on listservs and facebook groups for sure. šŸ™‚ We all love to dance, just need my youngest to age up a bit (he’s only 3.5) šŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi Chessakat
My name is Cynthia Yatchman. I am a Seattle based artist and art instructor. I will be teaching a weekday art class-monday mornings for kids, that might work well for “homeschoolers/unschoolers” starting in January 2014. The classes will be held at the Seattle Store, “Artists and Craftsman Art Supply” in the University District of Seattle.
    Beginning Drawing 10-11:30am, Jan 20,27, Feb 3,10
    Beginning Painting 10-11:30, Feb 24, March 3, 10. 17

I also will be teaching some art classes for kids using art history as inspiration on Sat mornings and Sun afternoons starting in March.

Descriptions of the classes can be found at http://www.theclassroomspace.com/

    thank you.

  3. Hi Chessakat,

I’m working with a young company in Seattle called FarmRaiser (www.farmraiser.com) We are turning the traditional school fundraising model on it’s head with kids selling high quality, local foods instead of highly processed junk food and wrapping paper. This is also a great way to teach about healthy eating and supporting local businesses. Many of the farms are also welcoming to visits.

I’m thinking this model would work well with homeschool groups since we can customize fundraisers to any size and need. These would be great to raise money for field trips, supplies, special classes etc.

I would love if you could add us as a HSG resource! Let me know if you have any questions.
